OUR HISTORY
Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville, with a history dating back to the post-World War II era, recently made the significant decision to sell its property in response to evolving financial realities, demographic changes, and the shifting needs of the community. Once a thriving congregation, the church faced declining attendance, mounting maintenance costs, and the challenges posed by geographic isolation after the construction of Interstate 40. After more than two years of study and reflection, church leaders chose to focus on their mission beyond the confines of a building, guided by the principle that "the church is the people – not the building."
The proceeds from the sale will establish an endowment dedicated to addressing some of Asheville’s most pressing social issues, such as homelessness, food insecurity, health care access, and children’s needs, in partnership with local nonprofits. Biltmore UMC’s commitment to racial justice and ongoing community involvement remains central to its vision, as the congregation considers new ways to be present and active in the city. Rather than simply offering financial support, members are determined to be directly engaged in ministry, continuing their legacy of service and adapting to better serve Asheville’s evolving needs.
